BEARPAW WHITETAIL UPDATE 2008
Bearpaw just completed an excellent whitetail season with 38 bucks being harvested. Average B & C score was a solid 156 gross. The success rate was 83%. We also had 9 missed opportunities on quality deer. 14 deer grossed 160 or better with 3 reaching the 170 mark. A good solid season for us.
The resident hunters harvested some of the top end bucks we were hunting. Don Gardner took a buck exceeding 190 points gross typical and Nathan Wald took another buck over 215. These two deer solidify the Peace Country as a consistent producer of top end whitetails.
The first and seconds hunts of November were very good this year with cool temperatures increasing the peak rut and creating a frenzy about 1 week earlier than normal.
Solid deer numbers in our Wildlife Management Units have provided our clients with legitimate opportunities at Whitetails in excess of 160 B & C.
Our last hunt which traditionally is very good, was hampered by mild temperatures, but still managed to produce our best buck – a 174” Boone & Crockett contender for 6 time repeat hunter, Paul Gardner. Paul added to his 184” mule deer taken with guide Robyn McKean by harvesting his 5th 160” whitetail with Bearpaw veteran guide Laurent Lavoie. However, the mild temperatures in the last week actually helped the deer by creating less physical stress.
We will continue to move more stands into the bush in 2009.
